Peacehaven is where the Sussex Downs meets the English Channel. The resulting cliffs are high, white and dramatic while the surrounding countryside is rolling and readily accessible. We were the fastest growing new town in the late '80s; community identity is finally emerging. Situated five miles east of Brighton the commuter flow is right for those who wish to live in Brighton but work away from the inner city. We have two trainers, and a building project to ensure that we are all comfortably accommodated in the near future, so this is an exciting time tocome and learn the art and skills of General Practice. The urban setting of Peacehaven seems to have more than its fair share of morbidity and we are busy enough to ensure that there are lots to see and do. There is a big emphasis on family and flexible working arrangements so that the doctors can also be husbands, wives and parents(!). The team is, of course, friendly and committed to providing an excellent learning environment, so do take the trouble to come and meet us!

We are a seven doctor practice in the town of Newhaven. We comprise of 4 full-time partners, 2 part-time partners and 1 part time salaried doctors. We have been a training practice since 1987 and Deborah Sharp has been our current trainer since 2005. We have the space to accommodate up to 2 part time registrars in a dedicated registrar riim withthe usual facilities for videoing. We have four rooms for our nurses and nursing assistants and we are actively developing nurse led clinics and already have a nurse led minor illness clinic in place. We are updating our telephone system and appointment booking procedure. Our premises were entirely rebuilt and modernised in 2000.
Our particular strength, we feel, is the strong mutually supportive relationship between all the doctors working here. Our out-of-hours is covered by the South East Health co-operative. Newhaven is a busy commercial port with other light industry. There has been a lot of development around the harbour in recent years. The practice area also covers most of Peacehaven. We have a national average elderly population, above average young families and some areas of urban deprivation.

Wish Park Surgery is a relatively small practice with only 5600 patients. The practice has a close working team which provides an ideal learning environment for trainees. The Practice is located in Hove in an area highly populated with young families and elderly people. There are a large percentage of nursing and rest homes in the area and as a result the surgery offers a great opportunity for trainees to gain experience in managing medical complexity, working holistically and observing a wealth of clinical symptoms and signs under our supervision. Dr Duncan Wells works closely in a partnership with Paul Evans and has a specialist interest in Dermatology. Duncan is also a Clinical Supervisor so there are usually either 2 registrars in practice or a registrar and an FY2 doctor. With teaching involvement from all of our clinical and non clinical staff we have found this provides a supportive and nurturing learning environment. The practice itself has Hove seafront and the beach at the end of the road with views of the sea from some of the consulting room windows.
