Obstetrics & Gynaecology – Brighton

The Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology provides a comprehensive service in the specialty. The Unit is based at the Royal Sussex County Hospital site with approximately 3500 deliveries per annum. The Neonatal unit is tertiary referral centre for the South Coast with 8 Intensive Care cots and 14 Special Care cots. The Labour ward consists of 10 delivery rooms, 2 high risk delivery rooms, a theatre and a pool birthing room. There is a post natal ward and antenatal ward as well as a fetal assessment unit. There are ultrasound and doppler facilities on site within the antenatal clinic.

The gynaecology ward unit is situated on Jowers Ward and, consists of a 13 bed ward and an Early Pregnancy Assessment Clinic. The Day Case Units are situated at RSCH and Victoria Hospital Lewes. Elective in-patient surgery takes place both on the RSCH and PRH sites. There is a dedicated Outpatients Department and Colposcopy Unit at The Royal Sussex County Hospital. The Gynae Cancer Centre is located in Brighton.

Duties include assisting in antenatal clinic, being on call for labour ward for in-patient ante-natal and post-natal patients and being on call for gynaecology as well as day to day management of gynaecology in-patients, assisting consultants at operating lists and outpatient clinics, and clerking future inpatients in a pre-admission clinic. In addition each SHO attends the obstetrics patients of their consultant daily.

In addition to the Trust audit days every month there is a weekly departmental educational meeting and dedicated weekly SHO tutorials. There is a separate weekly teaching session for the registrars to which the SHOs are welcome.
