Ophthalmology

This is a self-contained specialist unit of 16 beds and 6 Day Case chairs directly across the road from the main teaching hospital of the new medical school. It includes inpatient facilities for children. There is one ward sub-divided into larger and smaller areas including single rooms to facilitate flexibility of use. A new operating theatre suite opened in 2002 and includes a major and minor theatre, anaesthetic and recovery rooms and associated services. A new one stop cataract facility is now open. Subspeciality interests include paediatric ophthalmology, oculoplastics, medical and surgical retina, corneal, and neuro-ophthalmology. There are 6 orthoptists in the department with teaching responsibilities. There are facilities for digital fluorescein angiography, slit lamp photography, Thermal, non-thermal and Yag laser photocoagulation and A and B scanning. A 24 hour accident and emergency service is provided at the Eye Hospital.There is a dedicated teaching session every Friday afternoon. There will be emphasis in the timetable towards primary care, and diagnosis of acute ophthalmic problems.
