Trauma & Orthopaedics

The Orthopaedic department consists of 14 consultants, 10 SPR’s , 2 Associate Specialists, 2 Research Fellows, 1 Staff Grade, 3 Trust Grade at SpR level and 17 RTGs/F 2s/Trust Grades.

The department works on both main sites of BSUH. All trauma surgery is undertaken at the RSCH site in Brighton whilst elective surgery is undertaken at the new ISTC building in the grounds of PRH. Complex elective surgery also takes place on the PRH site.

The inpatient workload of the department at the RSCH site is run by 3 teams of consultants. Each team consists of four consultants, one associate specialist, two SPR’s and four SHO/ foundation year doctors. On the PRH site there is one SHO level doctor per team.

Most trainees will rotate between the two sites in a sequence laid out by the department. There is a dedicated teaching programme for trainees as well as regular morning trauma meetings.

The on call service on the main trauma site (RSCH) is a full shift system, whilst the PRH site runs a hospital at night rota to which all trainees are attached.

The Lead Clinician for the Department is Mr. S. Chauhan. The College Tutors are Mr. T. Turnbull and Mr. S. Bendall. The Foundation year supervisor is Mr. M. Patterson.
