MRCGP Overview

Introduction 

The MRCGP exam has three components. In your first two years, you need only be concerned with the WPBA, but bear in mind that this is one third of your final exam

 

1.         Workplace Based Assessment (WPBA)

            This amounts to an evaluation of progress in your performance over the 3 years.

            The main threads are:

            i) continuous cycle of standard assessments via the

  • CBD (Case Based Discussion)
  • Mini-CEX (Consulting Skills assessment)
  • DOPS (Direct Observation of Procedural Skills)
  • MSF (Multi-source 360° feedback)
  • COT (Consultation Observation Tool)

                ii) maintaining a learning log

                iii) regular educational reviews with your Educational Supervisor

     

                Progress is assessed and signed off annually by the Deanery

     

    2.         Applied Knowledge Test (AKT)

                MCQ&EMQ examination, three sittings every year.

     

    3.         Clinical Skills Assessment (CSA)

    OSCE/simulated surgery examination. Thirteen 10 minute consultations based on a routine surgery. Three sittings every year. We advise taking this component after the mid-point of ST3 to ensure you have had adequate exposure to a wide range of clinical scenarios in
    GP.
