Ultimately you are responsible for your own learning within the programme albet with the support of other people. You should ensure that you do have the regular meetings with your CS and ES, that you maintain your ePortfolio and that you keep uptodate with the assessments. As you realise medical education is vast and knowing 'everything' in any specialty is impossible. We aim, and are very committed on our programme, to develop you into becoming a 'lifelong learner'. That does not mean having to do the occassional exams throughout your life!!! It means that as you progress you should learn to develop the skills of learning, to be aware of how you learn and to be able to cope when you don't know something.
The Royal Collge of General Practitioners (RCGP) has developed a 'Curriculum for General Practice' which covers what they, and the GMC, considers the learning objectives for your 3 year training. From the outset we encourage you to familiarise yourself with the contents of the curriculum. This will help guide you as to what you should be putting in you ePortfolio Learning log.
The curriculum is organised around 6 domains of core competencies:
1. Primary Care Management
2. Person-centred care
3. Specific Problem Solving skills
4. A Comprehensive approach
5. Community Orientation
6. A Holistic Approach

During ST1 and ST2 years, most of your learning wil be workplace-based from the clinical problems that you encounter. This will be reinforced by departmental teaching programmes and other in-house educational activities. In addition, there are several opportunities to improve the GP perspective on your leanring such as 4 months GP posts for some, study leave days in GP, GP Locality meetings and attendance on the 'Day Release' VTS Programme.
