Hospital Components are arranged into 3 categories; by Hospital, by Department and by Rotation.

A & E Royal Sussex Hospital

The department is a major unit that opened in 1969. It underwent major refurbishment in the late 1990s. It sees 70,000 new patients per annum.

A & E Princess Royal Hospital

The Princess Royal Hospital is a new hospital to serve the people of Haywards Heath and surrounds. You will spend approximately 25% of your total time at this hospital’s fully staffed and equipped Accident and Emergency department.

Mid Sussex Psychiatry

There are 7 SHO posts in Mid-Sussex. The base is a 350 bedded district general hospital. Acute inpatient psychiatry, intensive psychiatric care unit, acute old age assessment, old age day hospital, medium stay rehabilitation unit and inpatient child and adolescent services are all based on site. Also on site is the regional neurosciences unit (neurology and neurosurgery).

In the adult psychiatry service there are 3 sectors each with its own CMHC and a Consultant led CMHT.

ENT Brighton

The Ear, Nose and Throat Department in Brighton is comprised of the following two units:
1) Royal Sussex County Hospital Main Administration Unit with Out Patient and In Patient facilities Audiology Department and Hearing Aid Department Special liaision with Radiotherapy Department
2) Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital, specialises in treatment of children from a wide area The Unit comprises mixture of Day Case and In-patients beds There are 5 operating sessions per week.
3) PRH Hospital – all in patient services on a 12 bedded unit covering 10 operating lists.

ENT Worthing

Worthing is a very busy district hospital department covering up to 200,000 population, where there are ENT commitments every day. The ENT ward runs from 09:00 Monday until 09:00 Sat with full ENT facilities available. The SHOs will be nonresident but must be able to get to the main hospital within 20 mins. All members are expected to participate in audit and research activities [there is an excellent library on site available 24 hrs] and there are opportunities to improve surgical skills in theatre on a daily basis

General Internal Medicine/Elderly Medicine – Haywards Heath

Medicine and Elderly Health are fully integrated at The Princess Royal Hospital. The appointees will participate at Senior House Officer level taking part in an unselected medical intake rota and will gain excellent experience in all the major medical specialities and on an active medical assessment unit. The Department runs an active educational programme for it’s SHO’s and there are also regular departmental teaching meetings, a weekly x-ray discussion meeting and monthly medical and surgical grand rounds.

Brighton Psychiatry

From August 2007 there will be eight GP VTS posts within Brighton and are in General Adult, Old Age, Substance Misuse Psychiatry and Learning Disabilities. All of these posts offer a mix of inpatient, outpatient and community work and encompass the training needs of future GPs. These posts provide excellent opportunities for working in a multi-disciplinary setting.

Trainees working within a sub-speciality such as Substance Misuse or Learning Disabilities will have the opportunity to experience General Adult and Old Age Psychiatry.

HIV/AIDS Medicine

Brighton has a high HIV seroprevalence (13.7% in men who have sex with men) & has one of the largest cohorts of HIV positive individuals in the UK with approximately 1100 patients currently under follow up. Outpatient services are located at the Lawson Unit (at the RSCH site) & the dedicated inpatient & day treatment unit is based in the Elton John Centre (currently at the Brighton General Hospital site, although this is due to move to the RSCH in 2005).

Genitourinary Medicine

Genitourinary Medicine services are provided at the Claude Nicol Centre (at the Royal Sussex County Hospital site) where approximately 25,000 attendances are seen each year. The department provides special clinics for adolescents, sex industry workers, gay & bisexual men, & individuals with chronic genital problems. There is a laboratory service on site for immediate diagnosis. There is a same-day HIV testing service & a fast-track service for victims of sexual assault.

Obstetrics & Gynaecology – Haywards Heath

The Gynaecology Unit (Horsted Keynes Ward) comprises 12 in-patient beds for Gynaecology and Breast care. An early pregnancy assessment service is provided in the unit. The unit provides an ambulatory diagnostic and therapeutic gynaecological Endoscopy service in the purpose-built Gynaecological Endoscopy and Colposcopy suite. Colposcopy Clinics are held on a regular basis.

Obstetrics & Gynaecology – Brighton

The Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology provides a comprehensive service in the specialty. The Unit is based at the Royal Sussex County Hospital site with approximately 3500 deliveries per annum. The Neonatal unit is tertiary referral centre for the South Coast with 8 Intensive Care cots and 14 Special Care cots. The Labour ward consists of 10 delivery rooms, 2 high risk delivery rooms, a theatre and a pool birthing room. There is a post natal ward and antenatal ward as well as a fetal assessment unit. There are ultrasound and doppler facilities on site within the antenatal clinic.

Ophthalmology

This is a self-contained specialist unit of 16 beds and 6 Day Case chairs directly across the road from the main teaching hospital of the new medical school. It includes inpatient facilities for children. There is one ward sub-divided into larger and smaller areas including single rooms to facilitate flexibility of use. A new operating theatre suite opened in 2002 and includes a major and minor theatre, anaesthetic and recovery rooms and associated services. A new one stop cataract facility is now open.

Paediatrics – Royal Alexandra Hospital

During this post you will gain experience in general paediatrics embracing paediatric medicine, neonatal and paediatric surgery, ambulatory care and A&E. The experience obtained is extensive and is enhanced by the fact that all consultants have sub-speciality interests. The consultant of the week provides close supervision and teaching at the bedside, and leads the daily post take ward rounds. Experience in examination of the newborn can be arranged.

Brighton Psychiatry

Psychiatry – Sussex Partnership NHS Trust

Sussex Partnership NHS Trust was formed on 1 April 2006 from West Sussex Health and Social Care, East Sussex County Healthcare and mental heath services from South Downs Health NHS Trust. This Trust services the population of Sussex.

Trauma & Orthopaedics

The Orthopaedic department consists of 14 consultants, 10 SPR’s , 2 Associate Specialists, 2 Research Fellows, 1 Staff Grade, 3 Trust Grade at SpR level and 17 RTGs/F 2s/Trust Grades.

The department works on both main sites of BSUH. All trauma surgery is undertaken at the RSCH site in Brighton whilst elective surgery is undertaken at the new ISTC building in the grounds of PRH. Complex elective surgery also takes place on the PRH site.

Other Facilities - Brighton

The Junior Medical Staff have their own mess.

There are various facilities available through the ‘Better Deal for Staff’ Scheme, details of which are available from the Personnel Department.

An extensive shopping area is easily within reach and there is an adequate public transport service from a stop outside the Hospital.
Good train services exist to London.

The Hospital is situated a few minutes walk from the sea and Brighton Marina.
